Life of Althurmond Ross
Althurmond Ross was born on December 7, 1959, to the late James, Sr., and Louise Ross of Mound Bayou, MS. He confessed his love for Christ at an early age and was a Pleasant Green M.B. Church member until his death.
Al attended John F Kennedy Memorial High School and graduated in 1979. He later attended Coahoma Community College from 1979-1981. Althurmond received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Valley State University from 1982-1987 and a Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching.
After graduating, his teaching and coaching career began at Mary Holmes College from 1989-2002, where he served as the Physical Education Instructor and Head Coach for the Women's and Men's basketball teams. From 2003-2005 he worked in the Mound Bayou Public School District as the Athletic Director, Head Coach for the Girls' basketball team, Physical Education Teacher, and Head Football Coach. From 2004- 2022 he was employed by Walmart as a Sporting Goods Sales Associate until he retired due to his decline in health. Althurmond also worked for the West Bolivar School District, where he worked at McEvans Elementary School as an In-school Suspension teacher. Later, from 2016-2018 he worked as an In-school Suspension teacher for the Mound Bayou Public School District, where he later retired.
In his free time, Al loved landscaping, sports, watching cartoons and Westerns, listening to blues, cooking, and eating.
Althurmond was preceded in death by his father and mother, James, Sr., and Louise Ross, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four brothers, and one sister.
He leaves to cherish his memories three sons, Whonta Webster, of Shelby, MS., Derrick Ross of Clarksdale, MS., Alshad Ross, of West Point, MS., and one daughter, AlKisha Ross of Clarksdale, MS., and six grandchildren, three grandsons: Alshun Ross, Ahmir Lynch-Ross, and Courtney Spearman, three granddaughters: A'Kierra Ross, Shanarius Ross, and Alexis Ross, three sisters Diann Ross, of Rancho Cucamonga, CA., Margaret Pickens and Palanda Ross, both of Mound Bayou, MS., and one brother Bobby E. Ross (Brietta), of San Antonio, TX., and a grand host of nieces and nephews.
