THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF KAWANZA “MOJO” BOVAN
Kawanza Cedric Bovan was born August 19, 1971 to Mary Alice Bovan-Flowers in Mound Bayou, MS. He transitioned into eternity on Monday, December 19, 2022 at his home, in Olive Branch, MS.
He was preceded in death by his father, James “Tank” Flowers and biological father Thomas Earl Bolden Kawanza (Mojo) attended Rosedale High School where he was a member of the track team and The Mighty Class of 1989. Upon graduation, he joined The United States Army. In 1990, he was deployed to Iraq with Operation Desert Storm (1st Calvary); during his enlistment he received several certifications/awards including: The Army Achievement Medal, Certificate of Commendation VII CORPS SAUDI ARABIA (Operation Desert Storm); Certificate of 1st Calvary Division Desert Shield/Storm participation. After the honorable discharge from active duty, he joined The MS National Guard (Drew, MS); He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on September 2, 1997; Post discharge he had several employers including MDOC, USG, FedEx, and Insituform. Kawanza (“Bo/Uncle Bo”) later joined the Sysco team where he’d been a loyal teammate for 23 years.
He was a dedicated man, especially to his children, family, and friends. Kawanza was blessed with three amazing children Kwanzaa M. Bovan, Ja’Khara C. Bovan, and Omari K. Bovan; an awesome mother, Mary Alice Flowers of Rosedale, MS; two sisters, Shonya M. Bovan of Rosedale, MS and Takelia L. Bovan of Olive Branch, MS; Grandmothers Maudie Tribune of Gunnison, MS and Sadie Bolden of Mound Bayou, MS; siblings also include Rev. Horace McKay of Cleveland, MS, James E. Green of Beulah, MS, Sid (Delia) Bolden, Tyrus Bolden, and Kemeka Bolden all of Mound Bayou, MS, Quitessa Leaks of Ecru, MS, and Roesha (Timothy) Sanders of Shelby, MS; He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous of friends.
