Mr. Michael Anthony Myers
Sunrise: September 1, 1959 ~ Sunset: July 18, 2022
Mr. Michael Anthony Myers was born to the union of Mr. Eddie & Mrs. Louise Myers on September 1, 1959 in the City of Cleveland. The doctors were skeptical of how long his time would be on earth, as he had severe asthma, But God! Mama stated that Michael was a fighter. His asthma kept him from participating in sports, but he compensated it by spending hours playing with a beloved electronic football game, where, he’d wrap white tape around each team member, assign them a team color and colored them with markers and placed a number on their backs. Michael accepted Christ at an early age at Old St. Phillip Baptist Church under the late Rev. Skipper. He graduated from Dear Ole East Side High in 1977.
Michael did not allow grass to grow under his feet. From Cleveland, he lived in Midland, TX, Houston, Chicago, and Memphis where he was employed at Baxter, in the banking industry, as a entrepreneur, at a film company and finally a company in Memphis. Michael exemplified the modeling of his parent’s, “hard work.”
Michael had a kind heart and a loving spirit. He was concerned about his family. While working at the film company in Chicago, he also became employed, to help his second mother, Bonnie and her late husband Richard operate their store. He helped out with Bonnie’s grandson. Jordan came into the house, one day, to say that some big boys had taken his bike, Uncle Mike jumped up and went to his aide. At the conclusion of every phone conversation, with family, he always asked about every member of that family, calling each member by name. He’d say, “tell them I asked about them.”
Michael set a tradition of Eddie & Louise’s children being affectionately identified by their birth number, with him being known as #9. Michael became our hero and first responder in February 2013 when he visited his birth home and noticed, right away, that our Beloved Matriarch wasn’t behaving as her usual self. He sounded the alarm and called everybody to let them know that, “something wasn’t right at 1128 Chrisman Street.” He potentially extended Mama’s quality of life, as she indeed had suffered a stroke. Mama would refer to him as her “babysitter.” #9 often stated that Mama was, “sweeter than a June puddin” and that Daddy told him to take care of his mother.
No one could pronounce the word, “sister” like Mike. He enunciate each letter, adding a roll to the “er” when speaking to his sisters; who loved on him with food, transportation and a listening ear. #9 was a avid reader, kept up with current events and discussed them eloquently. He loved to laugh. Another saying, “wait a minute now,” when he wanted to get his point across. Also, “Mama, I am not your problem (an inside joke)” He’d greet us with, “I’m still witcha” during every conversation and we are eternally Thankful to God that he remained with us, everyday of his 62 year’s of life!!
Just as Mike was a first responder, he passed the baton to his nephew, Bryan (B), who ran his errands and sounded the alarm on July 18th that something was wrong on Delta Street.
Michael, #9, was proceeded in death by his parents, Eddie & Louise, big sister, #8, Minister Brenda J. Myers; he leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Derek Proctor, Sr., one grandson, Derek Jr., sisters: Bernyce, Leola, Myrtle, Wendy & Macell, brothers: Eddie Jr. (MaDean), Bobby, Sr. (Mattie), Archie, Sr. (Cassandra), Ronald (Zelma) & Gregory, Sr. (Stephanie), a host of nephews who he affectionately called his “Big Nephews,” nieces, one aunt, Ethel Lee Green, cousins and friends.
